Hypocras - a little history

The Hypocras recipe is attributed to the famous Greek doctor Hippocrates (5th century BC). Much later the Christian knights, during a Crusade in the Orient, were conquered by this true "magic potion" and brought back the Hypocras recipe in the West. It is thanks to its very pleasant flavors and its invigorating and even aphrodisiac virtues (it was said...) that Hypocras became the fashionable Aperitif in the Middle Ages, in particular. Among its most famous followers we count: Rabelais, Henri IV, Louis XIV, Gaston Fébus... After the 18th century the precious recipe fell into oblivion. Today, thanks to the Séguélas family, Hypocras is faithful to its Medieval and 100% Natural recipe. Hypocras is the result of a learned Alchemy which uses plants, spices and wine. Hypocras is enjoyed chilled (11°) and without ice as an aperitif. It is also appreciated as a dessert wine to accompany chocolate pastries, for example...Many chefs use Hypocras in their recipes.
